Ivaylo is my favorite of the three (designed by the same guy who did Francisco and Bayinnaung so that makes sense.), with two truly memorable scenarios in a row (3rd and 4th). Kotyan #2 is a memorable, and difficult scenario. Kotyan Khan has a super unique vibe: for once you're not an all mighty conqueror but a nation fleeing for its survival, and it's superbly rendered in game. Tamerlane is the weakest but still manages to get enough original gameplay to be interesting. The Last Khans campaigns are all pretty decent.

The Burmese campaign is probably my favorite in the entire game with its 4th scenario being the most unique and interesting one, full of micro, careful exploration and all under a time limit. The Khmer campaign is the weakest, with unmemorable first scenarios but redeems itself in the final mission with a more challenging gameplay and a freedom in objectives. Rise of the Rajas have overall solid campaigns, with the Malay and Burmese ones significantly better than the other two. Yodit and Sundjata are good campaigns in their own right (with Yodit #1 potentially one of the hardest scenarios), and Francisco de Almeida is one of the best campaigns in the game, with a unique "travel and discovery" vibe. Tariq's campaign (Berbers) is probably the worst-designed campaign in the game as it exhibits all the un-fun gameplay elements that plague FE's campaigns: endless castle age battles, overly fortified towns and mindless spam of units from enemies that have no economy to raid. The Forgotten also have the most difficult scenario of all campaigns, Bari #4.Īfrican Kindgoms might be my favorite set of campaigns as it has two very solid campaigns, one excellent, and one absolutely garbage. The battles of the Forgotten remain a disgrace for the most part but there has been some significant improvements there. The Forgotten were by far the worst on HD but thankfully they have been revamped on DE. While Genghis Khan remains one of my favorites the other three are kinda subpar (I don't even include Wallace campaign in it since it's a 30-minute boring affair).ĪoC ones have some interesting stuff and I quite enjoyed the "Battles of the Conquerors" as you get to play various settings and many different civs. Scenarios where you need to carefully explore the map, micro small groups of units and such, are my favorites.ĪoK campaigns are dated.

Scenarios where you just need to boom and then go through endless spams of units and fortified walls (very often while being stuck at 120 pop and in castle age) are the most boring by far. I tend to enjoy campaigns that remind me the least of multiplayer. Usually I rank by designers (and you can really tell who designed what after playing a few).
#Best campaigns age of empires gold edition mod
If you're a decent player it's hardly a challenge (although some scenarios are definitely tricky), but I like the storytelling aspect, the pretty maps (just need to think about removing small trees and grid mod before jumping into the campaigns) and the different types of gameplay.įor me it's hard to pick favorites by expansion pack as I feel every set of campaigns have underwhelming campaigns as well as masterpieces. I played a lot of them earlier this year when my internet sucked so bad that I could hardly play any multiplayer and I quite enjoyed them. Multiplayer is the core of the game obviously, and it's great to tryhard in 1v1 or team games with friends.Ĭampaigns are a lot more relaxed. Click to expand. Why not both? I enjoy them for different purposes.
